Youth Showcase Session 1 Accomplishments
At the end of each program session, Club members showcase their accomplishments and favorite Club moments. Showcases are a celebration and a chance for friends and family to see what their loved ones have been working on at the Club over the last 10 weeks. They are also a chance to amplify our youths' voices, and help them strengthen skills like public speaking, time management and presenting.
Youth input dictates the programs that are offered each session at Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond, and members get to choose what experiences they want to participate in. Clothing design, podcasting and visual arts were programs that youth were really excited to see this session.
Southside
Southside members focused on visual arts, podcast production, and entrepreneurship during Session 1. Through Art 180's Look at My Kicks members designed sneakers based on how they wanted the world to see them. Designer Kids taught youth about entrepreneurship and how to make apparel like hats and purses. In Vodcasting, members learned how to create a podcast and how to safely use a platform to share the benefits of being a Club member.
MLK
Physical and mental health were big focus areas at MLK. Members enjoyed earning positive conflict resolution with East End Boxing. Through the Nurturing Minds' Nurturing Cafe, members learned the ins and outs of working in the restaurant industry, and were able to practice serving to real patrons. In addition to showcasing their accomplishments this session, a Club member was recognized for each grade level for their progress. We celebrate 6th grader Zy’ke, 7th grader Willow, and 8th grader Torae for their character, commitment to helping others, and personal development!
Teen & Community Center
This session, the Teen & Community Center offered a wide variety of programs from screenprinting with CHAT, and fashion design with The ForeignXChange, to lyricism and creative beats with Art 180. Teens were able to amplify their thoughts and beliefs through each program. In screenprinting, members sketched their own images, and later turned them into t-shirts. Fashion design allowed members to learn business basics and create their own line of hoodies and sweatpants.
Petersburg
Self-expression and reflection were themes at Petersburg as members explored translating their thoughts into visual arts, clothing design, poetry and podcasting. In partnership with The Haus on Market, members presented their artwork and discussed the African Amerian artists who they were inspired by. Through our leadership program, L.I.T., members learn what qualitites make a good leader. Members also explored podcast production, creating prompts to ask one another, and learning how to create a podcast from scratch.
Northside
Like other Clubs, Northside members explored the business of basics through a program with F.R.E.S.H. It’s A Girl Thang Period helped female Club members build confidence and courage. Members learned the importance of nutrition and how to cook healthy meals at home through Skinny Chef.
